Symposium on Climate Change and Cities

The LUMS Environmental Action Form (LEAF) is organizing a symposium regarding climate change and its effects on the cities of the world. The symposium is not just one of the myriad awareness events that are held so frequently. The first of its own kind, the ‘Symposium on Climate Change and Cities’ offers an interactive platform for the youth to contemplate about possible ways of tackling climatic change in terms of forming regulatory frameworks and policy actions.


The symposium will be held from the 15-17^th May (both days inclusive) and will primarily focus on

1. Energy
2. Transport and urban mobility
3. Water and sanitation
4. Land use and land planning

Students will be given a period of two weeks to submit academic papers on one of the above-mentioned themes. Successful candidates will then convene at LUMS for a series of workshops. Universities are allowed as many teams as they prefer, and each team will have four participants. These workshops will be conducted by experts from diverse fields from all over Pakistan. Participants will be required to present policy oriented solutions and alternate means of resolving the seemingly insurmountable challenges Pakistani cities face due to climate change. The winning proposal will be published and distributed to NGOs, government institutions and foreign donor organizations.

Tentative Schedule:

Friday: 15^th May, 2009

10am-12 noon: Registration of Participants/ Delegates at LUMS

3pm: Opening Ceremony

4:30-7:00pm: First Workshop

9:00 pm onwards: Social Event: Movie/ Theater Performance


Saturday: 16^th May, 2009

10am -12:30pm: Second Workshop

Lunch Break

4pm -8pm: Field Trip

Sunday: 17^th May, 2009

10:00am -12:30pm: Third Workshop

2:30pm -5:00pm: Fourth Workshop

8:00pm: Social Event/Closing Ceremony and Dinner

Charges Detail:

The registration fee is 1000 Rs per participant

The accomodation fee is 1500 Rs (3 nights) per participant
